Energy Auditing with Thermal Imaging

Thermal Image ceiling....... ..Wall Photo Thermal Image

The two thermal image photos above are good illustrations of what the thermal imaging camera sees during an energy audit. Notice the color bar to the right of both photos showing the colors that correspond to the surface temperature. The thermal imaging camera sees temperature rather than light. When we have lowered the homes inside pressure with the blower door the variations in temperature become more pronounced making it easier to find your homes deficiencies.

Both of these photos show that there are areas in the wall and ceiling that are missing insulation. This is all too common in all older homes. Unless your home was built within the last few years you stand a good chance to have some kind of insulation deficiency.

Thermal Camera

The photo above is one of the most commonly used thermal imaging cameras for home energy auditing. It is a very expensive and sensitive tool. It's unique ability to see through walls and ceilings has mane it a must have for serious energy auditors.

Thermal Image Home

The photo above is an illustration of what the thermal imaging camera would detect in an energy audit in the winter. The yellow areas show the heat rising and pushing through the ceiling leaks pulling in colder air from outside from the lower areas of the house. This air movement process is known as convection.

Convection is caused in our homes when the air we have paid to heat or cool follows it's nature. Hot air will always rise, cold air will always fall. This natural movement creates the pressure that results in you loosing the air you paid to condition.

Using the thermal imaging camera to locate the leaks in your homes walls, ceiling, and ductwork, then sealing them, is one of our best and least expensive ways to lower your energy bill.
